Annually, there are over 16.4 million fall accidents worldwide at living facilities that require subsequent medical care. Although the majority of the elderly have an emergency call system, they do not use it – loss of consciousness or not being able to activate the alarm are the main reasons. Lying on the floor for an extended period of time can lead to serious complications including pressure ulcers, thrombosis, pneumonia, hypothermia, dehydration and even death. It is crucial to prevent long lie times after a fall, to avoid serious health complications which negatively impact the quality of life for seniors and are costly to the healthcare system. This is exactly the problem Sedimentum addresses. Sedimentum AG is a healthcare startup that has developed a contactless and intelligent fall detector that understands the difference between, for example, a yoga exercise, a cat jumping around and a fall event.
